#Throwback Thursday: New York City in the Eighties

I used to like dancing at Area, which was on Hudson Street from 1983 to 1987. It was in a big brick building, and inside was a stone hallway that looked like the interior of a castle. Department store-type windows held displays, works of art, and people doing strange performance art as you walked inside. Celebrities included Andy Warhol, the B-52s, Boy George, Billy Idol, Keith Haring, David Byrne of the Talking Heads, Federico Fellini, Sting, Mayor Ed Koch, Bianca Jagger, and Calvin Klein. They had fantastic opening parties, and the invitations were very unusual and artistic. The bathrooms were, it goes without saying, unisex.
